This modern day fantasy is not your typical coming of age novel Nor is it just a superhero origin story Told in the first person, The Hero Next Door takes us into the mind of a male cheerleader whose unique pep gives him what he calls cheer immunity from some otherworld creatures who wreak havoc by converting competitive energy into unruly anger at high school football games.High school is a familiar enough setting for YA novels, but the male cheerleader s perspective is one you probably hav This modern day fantasy is not your typical coming of age novel Nor is it just a superhero origin story Told in the first person, The Hero Next Door takes us into the mind of a male cheerleader whose unique pep gives him what he calls cheer immunity from some otherworld creatures who wreak havoc by converting competitive energy into unruly anger at high school football games.High school is a familiar enough setting for YA novels, but the male cheerleader s perspective is one you probably haven t explored before Nick Stavros, like all good protagonists, is good deep down, but has flaws and troubles aplenty And these surface in ways inopportune, funny, and sometimes painful and awkward in a manner that makes it easy to remember high school Nick dons a cowl to do battle with the enemy and finds himself growing closer to a girl who seems smitten with the mask but oblivious to what s underneath Thus he finds himself battling demons both literally and figuratively At the same time, Nick realizes the difficulty in balancing his suffocating home life with the demands of his cheer squad It s a great story, made evenfun by some subtle, and some not so subtle references any fanboy can appreciate E.g., son of a motherless goat and land war in Asia Give it a try It s a quick read, and I think you ll find yourself enjoying it Who knows, you may even find a new respect for male cheerleaders

I don t star rate my own books At the moment so few people read them that it would skew the rating too hard Maybe down the road For now, let me just say that I m very proud of this book and what I was able to accomplish by telling this story in this fashion.Having been a cheerleader myself, I always wanted to write a male cheerleader protagonist So that was cool I hope you ll pick it up and give it a shot.
