A fascinating account of a key figure in the development of the West Coast in the mid 19th century.

As an Oregonian three generations back, I enjoyed this account of a major influencer in the settlement of Western North America Nokes writes clearly and draws on little known sources to bring enlightenment on pioneers prejudices and self interest, as well as their persistence in developing new lands The politics and growth of the West are as important as those of the East, but not so well known This is good reading for US history fans.

I read this book because I had previously read another Oregon history by this author Peter Burnett was a mover and a shaker in the early days of Oregon and then he went on to become the first governor of the state of California He seems to have been involved in many of the defining events of early Oregon and California How is it that I had never heard of him before

This book goes over a part of CA history most people know little or nothing about, the rise and fall of the first Governor of California First of all, he looks like Paul Newman Secondly, it s hard to believe one person lived all of this, the 1800s in CA were pretty eventful Murder, duals, racism, wagon trains, squatters, forts, deaths, steamboats, war, statehood, gold rush, religion So much If you are interested in California history this book will be right up your alley.

  5. says:

This book tells us how unqualified people get elected in Sacramento, since inception through today.
