This was a fun and scary book to read I would have enjoyed reading this book somewhere between the age of 8 or 9 and 13 Albertina is an 11 year old girl in a bizarre world with no books When she finds something with text to read, she reads it eagerly This means reading all the labels on products in the bathroom, for example Reading those labels is actually how she learned to read When the book opens, she has just moved to a new apartment and started in a new school Neither are pleasant ev This was a fun and scary book to read I would have enjoyed reading this book somewhere between the age of 8 or 9 and 13 Albertina is an 11 year old girl in a bizarre world with no books When she finds something with text to read, she reads it eagerly This means reading all the labels on products in the bathroom, for example Reading those labels is actually how she learned to read When the book opens, she has just moved to a new apartment and started in a new school Neither are pleasant events Then, one day, Grandmother Hulda shows up with millions of books The adventure begins I say fun because I love how the apartment turns into a giant library where Albertina and several kids from school hang out and start learning all sort of things from reading the books I think any child would love having a Grandmother Hulda.Something very serious is happening in Albertina s world Adults are disappearing and the bank, Guldbanken, seems to poke its nose into every aspect of life There is talk of making bombs and other topics that are very serious issues for a child to read I wonder how I would have approached them at age 10 I think Th rarinn Leifsson handles the topics well, but for anyone reading this review and who is looking for books for their children might want to read the book for themselves first Children have changed since the decades since I was 10, so perhaps I am overly cautious It s right that there are scary elements in the story There are scary things in our own world and Albertina s world has some very scary aspects to it As an adult, I could guess that this must have been written after the Icelandic financial crisis, and according to some reviews I found elsewhere, it was This is some of Leifsson s commentary on the crisis As such, it is a great way to tell _that_ story to children You don t need to know about the bank crisis to see what is good or bad about this society.I wouldn t want to read a chapter a night to a child I would be too impatient and curious to know what was going to happen next I would prefer to give it to a child who could read for themself However, I think it would be a great book to read together with a child There are a myriad of topics to discuss together afterward In the book I borrowed from the library my neighborhood library, not Grandmother Hulda s , the dedication page has a quote at the bottom Advarsel L sning kan forvolde un dvendig tankevirksomhed hos b rn Guldbanken My translation Warning Reading can cause unnecessary thinking in children The Gold Bank I am all for causing lots of random and imaginative thinking in children A comment on the illustrations by the author Elements of his drawing made me think of the late Claus Delauran and also of Thorbj rn Egner s illustrations of Karius and Baktus.I cannot remember where I read about this book possibly a friend on Instagram but I am glad I have read it

Not my cup of tea
